How I used Android, iPhone and the rest to post to WordPress

Sure, the Medill newsroom, and our little Monday night slice of Heaven, are great place to slap content online. But come on! There’s a great big world out there, just waiting to be covered. Up close and personal.

But how, you ask? Well, you have a phone, right? Maybe even a fancy Web-enabled one? Then you have a very powerful reporting tool.

We briefly went over the power of Posterous a few weeks back. It’s the e-mail-based tool that, among other things, can post straight to your blog, Twitter, Facebook, etc. It can even do video, audio and photos. Pretty solid, but it does automatically set up a Posterous blog for you, which you may not want. So what to do if you just want to go through WordPress?

Yes, of course, there’s an app for that.

iPhone

The iPhone app is pretty rugged, really. In addition to posting straight type, you can add images, audio, etc. straight from the Jesus phone. Oh, and it’s free. God bless America.

Android

The Google Andorid phones of the world no longer need to feel sad and lonely – WordPress loves them, too. The app is just out of beta, with version 1.0.2 released Feb. 22. The feature set is not quite as robust as the iPhone version, which has been out longer, and the Android app is still working out bugs. But it’s there.

Blackberry

The Blackberry app is basically all new – version 1.0 just released – for your blogging pleasure. It’s also pretty similar to the iPhone app, including video and photo uploads and site management.

But what if you don’t have an iPhone, Android phone or Blackberry? Well, get a better phone. Those smartphones are the only ones officially supported at the moment. But, you can still use Posterous if you have e-mail capability.

Happy wandering.
