Compare and contrast: the Chile earthquake coverage
Here’s a bit of a makeup assignment to cover a couple of site analysis elements and a quiz we’ve put off for various reasons the last few weeks.
The news coverage through the weekend of the Chilean earthquake and tsunami scare made for a good case study in breaking news, particularly online. Here’s your assignment: Do a site comparison of the two Chicago papers’ main story coverage pages, linked below. Be thorough. What was good, bad and ugly? What would you have done different?
Part 1: The Sun-Times
Originally posted about 2 a.m. Saturday morning, but link and screenshot pulled at 11:20 p.m. Saturday.
You can find the main story here. Again, be thorough in your criticism – up to and including sketches of how you would have done things differently if so inclined.
And a link to the Twitter stream for breaking coverage for consideration.
The Tribune
Originally posted about 4 a.m. Saturday morning, but link and screenshot pulled at 11:20 p.m. Saturday.

Your turn
Provide at least one example of site coverage from the weekend that you thought was the best – and explain why. Include a link and screen shots as possible.
The rules
This assignment is to be completed by Thursday at noon. You will file it in the form of a post as a Page called Chile on your site. Use basic HTML tools such as header tags, ordered or unordered lists, image inserts and HREF links to organize and report your findings. We will go over the HTML stuff a bit in class Monday.
Once posted, your assignment must be posted to Twitter.
There is no word count requirement or limit. Use what you need to get it right.
This will be worth 50 points
Questions, as always, may be directed to me via e-mail.
